Although there are far too many dementia patients put on psych drugs, sometimes it's the best treatment. My wife spent 2 wks in a psychiatric ward from MC because of her violent behavior. She returned to MC a very pleasant person. No, he will not get better. His dementia symptoms are the result of a progressive neurodegenerative disease.

Please don't use the word "demented". That's suitable for someone who is deranged, unbalanced or mentally ill. Your husband is none of those. I'm sure he wouldn't want you to call him demented... he is living with dementia.

The medications are helping him. The dementia, no, does not go away. But sometimes medications or medication cocktails can help to bring on calm and more rational thinking. These recipes are hit and miss and as a doctor admitted to me "anything but an exact science; it works or it doesn't". Sometimes they work for a while and then stop. But this for now is a relief. Please do use this time to catch your breath and be glad.
The real wonder here is that they kept him long enough to see what actually worked. Rare in our time. In that he was in psyc is there a reason? Is he suffering from a combination of some clinical illnesses of the mind as well as some dementia?
