I understand Medicare will possibly cover a part of the cost of a lift chair, if it is prescribed, etc. My question is...if I purchase one now myself, can I claim the reimbursement later, after having a doctor order one?

Regarding a lift chair... do you mean a chair that you place in a living room where you pull a lever and the chair lifts forward for easier getting in or out of a chair? Or do you mean a chair lift for placement on stairs to make it easier to go up and down the stairs?

Anyway, you would need to check with Medicare regarding how to make a claim. https://www.medicare.gov/coverage/durable-medical-equipment-coverage.html

I bought an electric lift chair/recliner for my mom a couple of years ago. As I recall, Medicare does not pay for the chair but her doc wrote a script and I didn't have to pay taxes. A good one is $600 to $800.
