My sister [76] who is 14 mths older than me, was just diagnosed w/Lewy Body Dementia. She lives in TX and I'm in Jersey. She's been in the hospital for 3 days now; but the doctor is suggesting her son look into an assisted living home. She lives on SS $ each month and that's it.
Is there any hope that an assisted living home near Ft Worth would allow her to move in w/just her SS ea mth? She has no assets and no savings.
Any advice would help - thank you - her sister

Are there other sources of income she may be entitled to?
If her husband was in the service would she be eligible for Aid and Attendance?
Was she in the service? If so her medical conditions my be considered "Service Connected Disability" and that would give her more benefits.

When looking for a facility that will be able to safely care for her look for one that can manage her care from Assisted Living to Skilled Nursing and or Memory Care if that is necessary. Also look for facilities that will also accept Medicaid. Not all do. And many want a resident to "private pay" for a while before Medicaid kicks in. The last thing you need to be doing is having to move her once again or scrambling to find a place that will accept Medicaid.

I am assuming there is no paid for home, as well, because were there such I would prefer her POA sell it and use assets for her ability to stay in AL as long as possible. Of course, with only SS she is eligible now for application for Medicaid. In that instance I would try for Board and Care or as they call it "six packs", so nicknamed for its usual 6 residents (more homelike). My brother spent his remaining time in ALF and was able to manage his early Lewy's well with their and my help until his demise from an unrelated illness.
I wish you the best.

Have her son ask the hospital to speak with their social worker for options in her situation.

No. Her son will need to apply for Medicaid on her behalf for long term care in a Skilled Nursing facility, most likely. Doctors make recommendations for patients w/o knowing their financial situation.

Best of luck.
