In VA when you apply for medicaid for long term care, you must disclose any insurance you have. In this case we have medicare, BC/BS Supplemental, and Medicare Part D. Do we need to continue to pay the BC/BS premium if full medicaid benefits are approved? Is there any benefit with level of care received or choice of doctors if BC/BS is dropped?

There should be no difference in the NH care of a Medicaid resident than to a self pay resident. There are doctors who specialize in geriatric care whose sole practice is at nursing homes. Residents will go outside if they need a specialist.

You can check with the social worker who took the Medicaid application.Medicaid should pay what Medicare doesn't, plus the Medicare Part D premium will be reduced. By dropping the supplement ins there will not be any more money in their pocket. That money will then go to the nursing home! The social worker should take care of all the details. In VA only $40 per month can be kept for personal needs!

From what I understand (in MI), my mother needs to keep her supplemental insurance and Medicare Part D; she'll pay for that out of her pension and SS. Except for $2,000 allowed to remain in her account, she'll have $60 to spend a month for necessities. The remainder will go to the nursing home, and Medicaid will pick up the rest. You should probably check online for your states's law to be sure. :-)
