My mother who is 89 has to wear depends. She goes to the bathroom all day long, but she still has a lot of urine in her depend and it really smells bad. I wash her day and night but she still has a bad smell. What can I do?

OK, now I see you asked this question twice. In the other post you said it was from urine-soaked Depends. It probably IS due to medications, I imagine. You might try other brands of Adult pads to see if odor is contained better.

Is this a "lady" bad smell, or a "poopy" bad smell? It makes a huge difference. I agree with the poster above. I'd also check to be sure she does not have a yeast infection, or other vaginal infection, if that's the source of the odor. You definitely want to treat the problem, and not just the odor. Bless you for being so loving as to wash her twice a day. That is awesome.

It could be from certain medications. I notice the same thing with my Mother. Ask the doctor. If that is the reason, not much can be done. I give my Mother yogurt every day for healthy bacteria, also lots of fresh fruits and vegies. Sometimes sugar can cause a yeast smell--like bread?--so watch sugar intake in all forms. Depending on doctor advice concerning sodium levels and kidney function, plain water is the best thing for her to drink. Try Metamucil, too, to make sure she is getting cleaned out. Bless her heart, and yours:)
