I have a 40 year old daughter who is in RHA Howells in New Bern. She has been there for 23 years. I only get to go see her once or twice a year and no one else goes to see her. It would be awesome for her to be close to me and where other family members would visit her there. She is SMR with Autistic behavior. She is petite, meek and mild, can push others away if they get to close and she doesnt want them to but not to point of trying to hurt them. SHe is loving and is for most happy. I live in Coinjock, My sister lives in Moyock, her brother lives in Woodbridge Va. So he hardly ever gets to see her. And with the distance I never get to bring her home. This could be a God sent and at same time it could very disappointing..I am surely trying to not get my hopes up. Thank You So much for your time.

Spirit: Is it possible that your daughter could stay at Currituck House for a month to try it out? Maybe you could talk to both facilities and see if a trial basis could be worked out before making a permanent change.

New Bern -- I have to revise what I just wrote. It isn't too expensive. I don't know what I was thinking.

I think you are being very thoughtful. I don't know how your cancer is now, but if your time is uncertain, it may be better for your daughter to leave her where she knows people. I know it is difficult. I wondered if it would be possible for you to go live near her. I know how expensive it can be in the area.

JessieBelle Yes she know me, I am the only one she will kiss on the mouth. I three years ago was diagnosed with Stage four Cancer and giving only 2 to 3 months to live..with the Grace of my Lord..he has giving me three more years. I am so afraid when I passed she will have NO one visiting her. At the time years ago..RHA Howells was the only place I found after seven years of searching that I was satisfied with of her getting cared for properly. But you know how it can become when you dont get to visit much and it is to far away to be able to bring her home for a day or two. Currituck House in Moyock is only 20 minutes away and I have heard nothing but good about it. It would be so easy to go get her to take her out or bring her home for a night. Good for me very much. My sister lives like 5 minutes from it and when her brother comes to visit me he has to go right by it. I know he feels bad as he doesnt get to go see her often..for with a big family, he comes to see me. gets here at night, stays the next day and night and leaves early the next morning, He lives four hrs from me...8 hrs from her. To go see her..that would put another six hours of travel. We have done it but its hard and I think that's why I don't visit her that much..it so hard to drive 3 hrs for a 2 to 3 hrs visit and have to leave not knowing when I will see her again if ever. She can walk and understands, doesnt talk, makes noises, she is about at a 2 yr old level in taking care of herself. If I could get her in an awesome place close...would be a heaven sent by God himself. I only worry..Am I being selfish. Taking her from those she has known for 23 yrs just so I can have more of her.

Welcome spiritinthesky. No, there is no age limit. Is RHA Howells the only facility that was available? This is a very sad separation. I know you would like to be closer. Does she know you when you visit? What is it like?
