There are tests that can lead the doctor to an opinion as to what is going on, such as whether they have cognitive decline, dementia, etc. There are various tests they can do, as well as examining the symptoms and medical history, so that they have a good idea of what is causing the problem. So, I suppose that I would say that there's not one test, but, a series of tests that can help with a diagnosis.

There are likely many around here that know more about this than I do. I night start with the Primary doctor and ask for a referral to a Neurologist who focuses on Alzheimers and other conditions that cause dementia. They can order MRI and a neurological evaluation, that might help with the diagnosis.
