My Mom is in a nursing home and I have to spend down her stimulus money. I was told I could open a burial account and it would not be counted as an asset. My understanding was the max in a burial account varied by state but in GA was 10K . Is that incorrect?

Don't quote me on this but I think the $10k for the funeral was how much Medicaid would accept without penalty at the time of application? After qualification it's $1500 spent for a pre-paid funeral.

This sounds good.

This has been brought up before. I think the 1500 is what Medicaid will pay towards a funeral if the recipient has no money put aside. I cashed in a insurance policy for 10k and Medicaid allowed me to prepay Moms funeral. But there was some discussion where a family member says that 1500 was only allowed.

Best thing is check with Medicaid in your state.

$1500 is not what Medicaid pays toward a funeral. In multiple states, $1500 is the maximum burial fund allowed. Medicaid in most states provides $0 in funeral assistance, usually the funding is provided by the city or state, not Medicaid & the eligibility requirement is that the person was on Medicaid.

Yes there is a 1500 limit. But spend down does not apply to stimulus until after 1 year so you can buy anything with the money before the 12 months.
