I never found anything, but Mom was not on medicaid. That might make a difference.

You would need to talk with a social worker or your local social security office. What I learned, in brief, is that the recipient has to be essentially broke. They can have something like $3000 in savings, and any money they make over about $700 goes to the gov't once they start receiving benefits. So if your family member has a lot of money saved up, you're out of luck. There is a 5 year lookback in Tx, and about the only thing they can spend their money on is a car and an irrevocable pre-paid funeral. However, I have heard that once a person is on medicaid you can get some money for caretaking, not a lot, and I have no idea how you go about applying for it. Also, medicaid in Tx will not pay for in-home care (I'm talking about having a full or part-time caregiver stay with your parent.. They might, however, pay for a provider 4-6 hrs/day which is a huge help). They will only pay for care in a nursing home. But again, if you want the latest and most accurate info, I would contact SS or if your relative has home health care, they should have a social worker on staff who can help you. Have you looked into home health care/visiting nurses? Mom had that for a couple of years, and having nurses and aides and therapists come to your home is a good thing. It gives you a very short break, but peace of mind knowing there are professionals keeping tabs.

Thanks! It sounds like my Mom hits all the above, her SS is 695 no savings at all. I'm the 5th of 7 daughters and all but one comes around every 3rd weekend (In the begining we all agreed that Mom would live with me and the others would take weekends that was 7 yrs ago that lasted all but a year. Then I was working steady so my husband and children assisted in helping watch over mom,now I'm laid off due to taking time off to care for her. Any little bit Helps, Thanks again for the info! God Bless :)
