Blood transfusions are needed when the H&H is too low to sustain life in normal circumstances. The condition involved may be irrelevant. There are rare conditions in which plasma transplantation is used for certain illnesses.
If you are speaking of Guillain-Barre is sometimes treated by plasmapheresis, and if that is what you are speaking of, it varies case to case about as much as an individual's fingerprint. Again, be guided by your doctor.
