Dad is moving from a AL to NH. I want to get coverage for his belongings. He had renters insurance in the AL. I was told they do not cover NH. So, what about fire or loss by theft? How do you get it? What do you do? Is coverage available in Ohio?

Interesting question, one for which I have no suggestions except to suggest that all his possessions are clearly marked. I'm assuming though that the NY stay is for rehab and not permanently.

I also wouldn't bring anything of value, or if you do, etch I some identification numbers, as police suggest for important possessions at home.

I don't know how a facility would handle a theft issue. it would have to have fire insurance though, but whether or not that would extend to patient's possessions is something I don't know.

I'm looking forward to seeing answers from someone with more knowledge on this subject than me.

NH stay will be permanent now. He can no longer get up on his own. Right now I only have sweat outfits and other essentials. I am keeping anything of value at home. I was even afraid to leave his winter coat as it might walk off before next winter. I have marked some things, but not everything and I do his laundry. I even asked two well known insurance agencies and they have nothing. Even the people at the nursing home could not give me a clear answer.

Some companies offer renters insurance for nursing home residents. Google insurance coverage for belongings in nursing home. It may have to be limited based on the type of facility. The reason you want coverage may make it too expensive or deductible too high to work. American Family popped up as offering renters with that provision, but I have no direct knowledge of them;)

Most policies have a sizeable deductible, even homeowners and renters could have $1000 deductible and I doubt if he would have that much in belongings. I will say that at a NH he must have every garment marked with his name or it will get lost in the laundry.
