Went to the doctor about cataracts and didn't realize there was something more serious.

Were you searching for things on glaucoma, ProfeChari? There are two types, one more serious than the other. Many elders have the more benign type where the duct that drains the aqueous humour does not drain well. This type is usually easily treated with a couple of eye drops used daily. Lumigan and timolol are the ones my mother uses. The pressure in her eyes has been good since she started the drops several years ago. Let us know more about what is going on with you. Many people in the group probably have experience with glaucoma.

Thank you so much for your information, JessieBelle. I am very happy to know your mother's glaucoma is being controlled by eye drops. My husband, who is will be 87 this year, went to the doctor today thinking we were going to discuss his having a cataract removed. We didn't realize anything more serious was going on. We were told that the pressure in his eyes, which is supposed to be around 20, is 39 and 40! After all the tests were completed, we were shown a film about glaucoma and cataracts. Then, the doctor told us that my husband has already lost 95% of the vision in his left eye and probably near 75% in the other. Of course, the glaucoma has to be treated before we even think of the cataract removal. We started his drops tonight, return for another doctor's appointment in about a month, and the surgery is scheduled a couple of weeks after that. Without the surgery, he will be blind within a matter of months. Obviously we are following the doctor's recommendations. This doctor is well known as the best in his filed in the surrounding area of a fairly big city. We are both upset and trying not to show it. He has always had a phobia of anything being doine to him above the neck, and he laughingly told me he was pretty calm with the doctor in spite of being "scared s---less!" My husband also has five grown daughters by his first marriage, and we were told to tell all of them to be checked. I think we are both just stunned by what is happening, especially since neither of us knew anything more serious than the cataract was wrong. He had his eyes checked for new glasses around two years ago and was just told to have the cataract checked. I have read all the literature, but nothing is better than hearing other people's experiences. Thanks again, Jessiebellle.
