My elderly relative is a veteran and eventually there may come a day when he needs more care than I provide. Are all elderly veterans automatically qualified for VA nursing homes? I assume it will be like any other nursing home and he will have to be on medicaid and they will take his social security and pension? Are VA nursing homes in general considered better or worse than the average nursing home. Would appreciate hearing from anyone who has information. Thank you.

Thank all of you for your helpful information. He is signed up for benefits with the VA and due to his age is listed as Group IV. We are seeing his geriatric doctor later this week and I will ask her a lot of questions. Thanks again.

I agree with the others here, sign up and get the local information where you are. Also, for our VA home here, its easier to be admitted from the hospital because there is a waiting list for ours.( they see more of an emergency situation- but do not wait until an emergency because it might be harder to get him in where your located) Again, as pamstegman and Onlee1 mentioned, talk to them in person! Good luck and thank your relative for serving for me :)

Sign him up for VA health benefits if you haven't already. He must be approved before he can receive any assistance - health, financial, residental. Here's a link that explains benefit and enrollment - http://www.va.gov/opa/publications/benefits_book/benefits_chap01.asp

Some VA facilities are great; some are not. Our local VA contracts with local nursing homes and skilled nursing facilities, so not all veterans are on campus. Here's a link about the residential settings - http://www.va.gov/GERIATRICS/guide/longtermcare/Nursing_Home_and_Residential_Services.asp

Thank you -- he's actually a Korean War veteran of 90.

If he was a WWII veteran, he is IN. The dependent factor is when and where he served. So find his discharge papers, for starters. VA homes can be excellent or H*ll, depending on the facility. Your local VFW or American Legion has members who visit these places and they know the good from the bad. Talk to them.
