In search of help in finding a facility that will home a violent combative dementia patient.

Hi Gigi, I'm not sure I can give any real help other than to suggest that your mom be seen by a specialist - alz/neurologist or a gerintologist to see if her medications are correct, also have her checked for a UTI. I know when my mom became aggressive she was placed on meds that really helped calm her down. Has she been seen by a specialist? My mom was seen by a neurologist that specialized in dementia and was wonderful when it came to dealing with behaviors like aggression and he didn't over medicate! If this is a sudden change in her behavior a UTI could be to blame and she should be tested ASAP. I hope for the best for you and her, blessings to you both. Lindaz

She needs a psych eval. Usually they aren't sent somewhere and her meds are adjusted or introduced. I would assume the facility checked for a UTI. Were meds suggested? There are meds for violent behaviour.

I should also add that wanting to go 'home' may mean many things...it could be her childhood home or anywhere else. My mom lived in her home for 40 years and still repeatedly asked to go 'home', this is very common. Again, blessings, Linda

My mom became so combative with a UTI that she had to be restrained after attacking the nurses. Is she st home now? Do not try to explain to her that she cannot return home if that sets her off. Tell her you’re waiting for the doctor to sign papers...anything but setting her off by telling her she can’t go home. She doesn’t understand that When she flies off the handle, you can choose to call 911 and ask that she be Baker Acted. They will take her to a mental health facility where she will be evaluated and facilities will be suggested. You can also call Adult Protective Services and ask for help.
