Any advice for this type of "help". My family member has some memory issues that are progressing. We don't need nursing, but daily simple activities...medicine dose, breakfast and or lunch, then maybe trips to grocery store, etc. Any suggestions...
Non-medical home care is the term for this level of care. It is supportive, does not require the services of a licensed health professional, and is paid for by the client or family. The local Area on Agency can likely give you a list of agencies in your area that they have heard good reports from their clients - but can't recommend any particular agency. Research how to choose a caregiver for information. You might choose to hire someone privately or use an agency. Pros and cons to each. Costs may seem very high...but saving money may not be the biggest priority. An agency screens staff, they are bonded, (covered by agency insurance while in the home), and a care manager calls/visits to check in on how things are going. Many of these are franchises, such as Home Instead, Visiting Angels, etc. Find out about the particular agency near you - how long in business, who is the owner/manager, look up that person on line (Linked In and Facebook) to see what you can find about their background, etc. An agency should be able to give you a couple of references that you can call. Just be aware, that aides are not suppose to dispense medication. They are not medically trained. You will still be responsible for filling the Med planner. All an aide is suppose to do is hand the planner to the client and the client removes the pills. Or the aide opens the med planner and tips the pills into the hand of the client. At no time is an aide to handle medication unless trained as a Medtech.
There are CNAs, Certified Nurses aides, and Homecare aides. Basically they have the same responsibilities but Homecare aides do more of what you are looking for. Look up the definitions in your State. Some States have a different name for CNAs its a Personal something. Another member will know.
