My dad suffers from congestive heart failure, has diabetic ulcer on his foot and can barely walk, and has a terrible infection due to the ulcer. I had to quit my job to stay home and care for him but were struggling as a family without my income. He already has Medicaid as a form of insurance but I don't know how to begin the process of becoming his caregiver. Any tips?

Dear NYdaughter,
OP didn't state she had any felonies that was me. Dad hasn't been in the picture for 49 years as for my job I probably am still fibbing myself I would have quit that job regardless of mom's health. I was bookkeeper and the owner new my previous issues with embezzlement so thought I would be ok with "creative bookkeeping". I was not but I knew it was just a matter of time before he demanded me to cooperate. I got $300 a week unemployment for the first year so wasn't going in with my eyes closed.

P.S. medicade pays the company that pays you I don't think they will pay you directly. I could be wrong but that's usually unlikely lol. Plus. If you have anything questionable in your background you probably won't get approved. I had that problem. I embezzled from an employer 30 years ago went to prison paid the restitution but they won't approve me. I could understand if they were worried about my mom but they're perfectly fine with me helping her they just won't pay me for it.

You state that your family is suffering without the income you earned. Given your felony history, what made you think it was a good idea to quit your job? What's going to happen to you when your father dies and you're no longer his caregiver for which you're not going to get paid?

Call a local In Home Support Services office. You'll have to fill out an application and pass background check. The process takes a while they still need to come over an assess your dad to see how many hours they'll give him. You really need to start now. They will at least (probably) be able to get someone out there to help out until your application goes through

IHSS is a California program, the OP is in Florida. IHSS pays the caregiver directly. It will be the same in Florida if the OPs father qualifies for SMMLTC—her father will hire her and the program will cut her a check. There will not be a caregiver agency involved.

has your dad been approved for home care through Medicaid? Being eligible for Medicaid doesn’t automatically mean he’s eligible for home care. Once he’s approved for it—it’s called the statewide Medicaid manager care long term care program-he can “hire” you as his caregiver. Pay is minimum wage.
