I’m a caregiver for a 102-year-old lady and her 82-year-old daughter who suffers from dementia. Am I legally responsible if something happens after I put the lock back on the fence when I leave?

Recently APS was called in because the daughter was roaming the highway. Family put up a six-foot privacy fence. On the gate they put a pad lock on. It is not locked but it goes through latch. When this is done, you can’t get out. I’m worried something might happen, and if it does, legally am I responsible if I put the lock back on when I leave? If anybody can give me advice I would greatly appreciate it.

Not a good situation all around. Call council on aging, anyone with senior experience and report it. They will advise you what is done in your community. Take care.

They think an ALZ person can't figure out how to unlatch the lock if not locked? APS should have been called in. Hopefully they are taking care of things. No, I don't think you would be held responsible if the family asked you to do it that way.

You mean nobody else is there after you leave and they are putting a centenarian in charge of her daughter with Alzheimer's? If I were you I would contact APS and let them know, whether you could be held responsible or not this is just not right.
