I am currently at risk of losing my home (I rent duplex). I have been here for 18 years and rent is 550/mo and landlady has not gone up on my rent but once at the beginning. I need help or suggestions on choices???? I may have none. The streets is where I'm headed as I live alone and have no family. I need assistance or ideas quick! But I'm told housing assistance has a wait list of 5-10 yrs and is only good for one month! What are people to do? I have worked since I was 16 and last job was for 15 years. Thank God I have or I wouldn't have something to live on today! HELP. Oh, and I am just dollars over the poverty level to qualify for Medicaid. I guess I will have to give up my doctors (PCP and pain mgt doc and back surgeon and back specialist) and go to JPS for medical. Much of my SS goes to Medicare, dental, & Advantage insurances. Almost half. And more when they order tests.

As a divorced woman, if you were married beyond a certain number of years, your Social Security benefits can be calculated from your ex-husband's earnings (even if he is remarried). So, if he earned more than you, your SS benefit could increase. It does not matter to his account because the funds are taken from a SS benefit fund. He likely will not even be notified about your application.

You would fill out a request at Social Security offices or online, or telephone.

An individual who gets $19/mo in SNAP. This individual will get a supplement of $215 – boosting SNAP to $234 (max for 1). There is an additional benefit so check your EBT card balance by phone, to see if you are getting this.

This benefit has been extended beyond September in many states.

If at all possible, stay in your duplex and pay the new rent?
Your food is paid for by SNAP.

You need a benefits counselor, start by calling Supportive Services at your nearest senior center.

More help could be provided here if you would come back and post a response.

Please contact your local area agency on aging, or office on aging. Your local city hall should have some numbers or point you in the right direction. As you are at risk, perhaps adult protective services. Also legal aid. Not sure but I don't think you should have to need an attny to file for disability though they may make the task easier especially on you. There may be some plans that help you to get Medicaid along with Meidicare....not to mention food help....

Did you apply for both SSDI and SSI?

You have a monthly SS payment of $13xx. dollars and you've been told you're not eliigible for Medicaid?

It loooks to me like the eligible yearly income for a single person is $25,xxx.00.

Who told you that you weren't eligible?

dbcrtr2ac - can you take in a roommate to share the rent? Or can you rent a room in someone's house, usually this is less expensive than renting your own place.

Also, start applying for Section 8 Housing now, so later on when it becomes available you will be able to have a decent place of your own. If you're lucky, it maybe 5 years, so when you're 73, you won't have to worry about not having a roof over your head. In some places, the Housing Authority gives priority to seniors at risk of homelessness. You should ask them about that.

Once you reach retirement age you are no longer eligible for disability, so don't waste any time on that. My husband after having a massive stroke at the age of 48 was first on disability, but when he turned 65, it automatically switched to just his Social Security retirement, with the amount staying the same of course.
Have you applied for food stamps in your area? And if you make just a little too much to qualify for Medicaid, then you may want to seek some free legal advice as how to qualify, since you're so close. There has to be a way.
I know a lot of churches have food pantries and such, so you may want to go to some of them, so you can at least eat.
I wish I had more to offer you, but really you need to have someone help you get on Medicaid. Best wishes.

I don't think at 68 you can get SS disability. It has to be gotten before you are 65. Were you turned down the first time? If so, you could have then gotten an SS lawyer to handle your appeal. Most people applying get turned down the first time. Call your Social Service office and ask for the name of SS lawyers in your area. They cannot charge you upfront. Their fee is paid from retro money that is calculated usually from the first time you applied. They receive 25% from the retro. You can ask the lawyer how do you go about applying when u have done it before. You may be able to again.

Insurance, have you tried Medicaid? In my State you get health, prescriptions, dental and vision. Medicare Advantages advertise here that they will pay for the Medicare premium. If I were you, I would call your Office of Aging and ask someone if they can help you lower your healthcare costs. MAs are good for some people and not others. O of A can help you with Medicaid too.

Housing, HUD only does vouchers once a year. I think enrollment is coming up. Call your Social Services to find out. In my area there are HUD subsidized apartments. They charge 30% of monthly income for rent. Your responsible for electric and cable. With the ability to stream, you really don't need cable or can have the bare minimum.

$19 in food stamps. Was it worth filling all the paperwork for? We choose not to apply for my nephew because of the paperwork involved and then maybe only getting a few bucks. All I can say is find out where the food banks are. Churches usually have closets. If you can get on Medicaid a number of places will be available. The Government gives out food monthly in our County thru the United Way. Shop those dollar stores. The one near me sells name brand for 1.00 a can. Lots cheaper than the Grocery chains.

Is there a church in your area? They can likely help with basics like food.

You write that you can't work.   Do you have a disability, and if so, have you filed for disability?

I know little about Section 8 housing, but believe there is a wait time.  However, one of the sources 97yroldmom cited might be able to help you with this.

It's not my intent to pry, but what happened to create this crisis situation?    If something specific precipitated it, including work injury, are there options to recover from this event?

Does your state offer resource assistance?   Are you by any chance a Veteran?

There is a waiting list for Section 8. If you have an eligible condition, though, you can move up the list.

Keep in touch with this forum. Someone may have better suggestions but don’t wait to start contacting agencies.

When do you have to be moved?
