I would check with the VA just to be sure but if they wanted it back they would have contacted you as soon as they learned of the Death.
You could call and talk to Patient Advocate or if you have a local CBOC (community based outpatient clinic) they would be less busy than calling the VA hospital.
Depending on the equipment they may not be able to use it again.
Hoyer, Sit to Stand type equipment is reusable but slings are not.
Commode, the base portion can be reused but not the pans.
(although these are items that I got from Hospice so they were rented)
Wheelchair, you do not have to return, if needed every Veteran gets a new one.

I guess the easiest way is there a phone number on the equipment, if not then it is probably yours to do with what you want. If there is a phone number you could call that number to determine if it is rented or if you own it.
