It doesn't matter what time of the month you get ur check. SS is like a job. You get paid after u do the work. I know it doesn't seem fair but June check, no matter when u receive it it, is Mays earnings. If a person dies in May and the June check still gets issued, SS will take it back.
If there are any bills pending and that check was needed to pay them, then its a debt that doesn't get paid. Family is not responsible for the debt.
Sounds like this person's dispersement of payment started the month after their birth month. Depending what day of the month their birthday falls will determine when payments start. My birth day falls on the 14th, dispersement of my payments started following month.
My mother passed on August 30th. Nope. No passing “Go”. No SS check. I tend to think that since four months have 30 days then if someone passes on the 30th the check should be issued. If it had been the next month, September - it would have been paid. Crummy luck of the draw.

Seriously, you can make the same argument for any aspect of Social Security. The start date, the end date, the monthly amount, the death benefits. What I think is unfair is that nobody is guaranteed to get out all that they put in. But it's actuarially determined. Benefits are paid a month in arrears so that the system doesn't have to try to recoup any payments made for periods after the person died. At least in the normal course. Sure, the system could probably be improved, but I think these drawbacks are minor compared to the benefits it provides. JMO.
In Canada, social programs pay in advance. Welfare cheque’s, CPP etc, are paid the last week of the month. These are the funds for the following month.
in your case are you being asked to pay back the funds received for all of May or just the last couple days?
Social security doesn’t pay in advance. Since her mom just died, she hasn’t been asked to pay back anything yet. She’s asking if May’s payment which will be deposited in June, has to be returned to social security and the answer is yes. Social security doesn’t prorate either so the entire check goes back to social security.
