My mother is turning 98 on Tuesday, depending on her frame of mind, and and how well she is feeling, I was thinking of taking her with some family members overnight at a nice hotel. We will have dinner in our room or outside in the sunshine on the lawn in the While Mountains. We will take a stroll around a few trails and a nice ride up the mountain. She has visited this hotel often in the past so my mother is familiar with the surroundings. She wants to go, and we want to make it as pleasant as possible. The pool will be open but only a few people allowed, the restaurant will be closed to service but we can do take out and sit in the dining room. It is a lovely place, on the water with boats, table and chairs, two pools, a fitness area and a nice lobby and gift shop. We have not been away for six months, I thought this would be a great opportunity for my mom and rest of us. Thank you for your reply in advance.

I think it is a great idea unless she has dementia/Alzheimer's. When my son was married in the mountains, out of town some family decided my mom should go. They stayed in a B&B overnight. Mom was up all night long, nobody got any sleep and all mom wanted to do was go home. A dreadful and terribly stressful time was had by all. Even without covid.

Oh no, that is definitely not the kind of night away anyone wanted! I hope she feels better soon.

Update. My mother went into the hospital night before her 98th birthday with a serious UTI, on IV antibiotics. We will celebrate when she gets home and feels better. I am able to stay with her in her room, difficult at first to get the ok, but finally approved by the doctor The staff loves her and she gets great care. No Covid cases so far. The nurse manager allowed my niece/ mothers granddaughter to visit her for one hour on her birthday. Family sang Happy Birthday over the phone. Thanks for all your advice, appreciate it. We are packed and ready to go once my mom is better.

I would not risk it. If Mom wants to risk it I think that is then her business, as long as she understands the risk. I am for whatever your family collectively wish to do. Maintain your masks and social distancing. You seem to know the risks. Again, as a 78 year old I wouldn't be risking this; that's just me.
If you go, have a good time.

I too think its a nice thing. You know Mom best. My Mom didn't like being away from home for more than an hour. Like said, you will have the memories.

Absolutely take her. She’s 98, there’s no reason to make her stop living her life. Make all the memories you can, while you can. I think this is a wonderful idea! You’ve been home for 6 months. I am sure all of you could use some fresh air, a change of scenery and a real pick-me-up.

earlybird - you've listed all the good reasons why you should take your mom on this lovely trip. So why the hesitation? What is giving you pause?

Exposing my mother and rest of us to possible Covid. It is a little on my mind, but reading the replies here, I feel more comfortable now. Thank you!

Oh my gosh, what a lovely idea! Yes of course you should go. We have all been cooped up for way too long, and what better excuse for a getaway, than your moms birthday. Of course take whatever precautions you deem necessary, but just go and enjoy your moms special day and your family. (and if I could, I would sneak along in one of your suitcases!)

I agree, I think that as long as you are taking the same precautions as you would normally be at home I can't see why it would be a problem. I hope you have good weather!

You're welcome "earlybird," - I just hope she feels good - I want her to enjoy her 98th birthday with her family just like you do!

Dear "earlybird,"

I think it's a great idea and especially since she wants to go!

Just be sure to bring the necessary items for disinfecting anything especially at the hotel.

Sounds like it would be beneficial for all of you after not getting away for the past six months.

A very lovely idea for an overnight stay on her 98th birthday!
