My mom appointed me POA in summer 2023. She had 2 strokes and came to live with me, my husband and older sons. She had her own retirement, and was competent. I’ve been on my own disability due to cancer and many other things, been getting it for 20 years. She passes away a year and a half later, then a few months after my payments stop. I was only durable POA. Nothing about her money. She had more supplies then were covered to buy. I did not take any pay or apply for any. I did what needed to be done. I don’t understand?

Maybe it's true that you are now retirement age and your income payments will now come from SS. If so, maybe there's a lag time during this transition. It wouldn't surprise me... my interactions with the government have been dismal. I still can't get USPS to forward my mail... since March.

Call Social Security and talk to them. They made a mistake.

SSDI payments stop when you reach Full Retirement Age. Is that perhaps the case?

But then they convert to regular Social Security. Should happen automatically. It would have happened to my late husband had he lived another three months. The social worker at his long-term care center told me I (as his financial and medical POA) wouldn't have had to do anything for this to happen.

Sorry, you need to call Social Security and find out why your payments stopped. Did you get paperwork for renewal? It comes every so many years but you must still prove that your disability still keeps you from holding down a job.

We strangers out here would be the last to understand this apparent coincidence, as well.

It is time for you to contact disability and ask them why your disability is cancelled. If you qualified for SSDI for your cancer diagnosis that has ZERO to do with your mother, and I am certain she was never mentioned at any point in your application and approval process; am I right? So these are two sitations. Are you saying your SSDI checks just stopped for no reason, with no notification, no letter, and you cannot reach the authorities? If that's the case, keep trying, and contact a Licensed Social Worker if you are unable after a few months to get an answer on the phone.

My sympathy on the loss of your mom, and yes, the POA expires the day she dies. Were you also her executor? Will you be managing the settlement of her estate, if any exists? If not, then who is the executor, or did she die intestate (without a will). If that latter is the case, and your mother has an estate, then as next of kin you should contact a probate attorney and begin the process of becoming administrator of your Mom's estate.

I may be missing something, but I can't imagine what "supplies" have to do with this picture?
I wish you lots of luck moving forward, but these are two separate cases for you to followup with and you will need to address them one at a time.
