Urine is getting between the toilet and lift. Should I try a gasket for a tighter seal? Just looking for ideas. I really don't want to take the whole thing apart to clean it if there's a better way.
One of the drawbacks of all toilet seat extensions is the difficulty in keeping them clean, especially between the bowl and unit, and I never found any solution other than removing it and cleaning periodically. I wonder.... if the open bottom pail that comes with a commode would fit under the toilet seat and extend below where the toilet and extension meet it might keep urine from splashing there...🤔
Had this problem with my MILs. I could get my hand under with a cloth wrapped around it sprayed with cleaner. Not easy but could do it. So when I needed one for Mom, I found one online that was hinged so you could lift it up to clean. You may want to look into getting one of them. I think I paid $40.
Dad has one and it is designed to be able to remove the riser, without removing the bolts, but to effectively clean I have to remove the whole thing. Otherwise it stinks.
I looked into replacing the toilet with a 'comfort height' one, but it is an old house and it is unlikely the plumbing would accommodate a new toilet. The drain pipe would have to be moved and that is far too expensive a remodel for a house Dad stays in for a couple months a year.
Don't use a seat riser on the toilet, use a commode over the toilet. They are designed for that. Instead of using the pail, use the splash guard to bridge the gap between the commode seat and the toilet. This also has the benefit of having convenient hand holds on each side of the toilet.
But if you must use a seat riser, I used to use caulk to form a waterproof seal before switching over to a commode over the toilet.

Just a suggestion if u use a commode and you may realize this when u install it. Take the back bar off. They usually just screw on. What is nice about using a commode, easier for the person to get up and more stability because of the legs.
