My mom had a stroke at home, went by ambulance to the ER and never recovered. She was sedated a Thrombectomy Procedure and then kept sedated another 24hrs to see how she does? Mom never recovered, she came home on Hospice and passed. I read all these stories of those older who have had a stroke and recovered? My Mom never responded, why? Just hoping to get some peace. Thank you

These procedures are dangerous at best and for an elder with a stroke already, they are exceedingly dangerous. I would imagine this was explained to at least the next of kin or the POA. Your best person to tell you what the cause of death for your Mom was would be the physician in care of her case. It would be impossible for anyone here to understand what occurred in this individual case even with a medical background, as it sounds as though your Mom did survive the procedure, but not without severe injury already having been caused to the brain, likely by the original thrombus itself. I am so sorry for this loss, but you will likely never have an answer that is certain, and even if you did, why would it really matter, for your loss and your grieving would not/could not be changed. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.

Nobody can answer such a question, likely not even the medical doctors at this point. At 92 years old with a stroke and a blood clot to the brain, recovery would seem unlikely. It may be a blessing that your mom is with God now because the rehab from such an event would have been a terrible journey for her.

I'm so sorry you are struggling with confusion and grief. Death is difficult to accept when we love a parent so deeply. I hope you are able to accept that this was your mom's time to transition and allow yourself to heal in due time. Healing doesn't mean you forget; just that you are able to remember your beloved mom with joy and happiness. Wishing you peace and acceptance moving forward.

I am so sorry for the loss of your mom!

You ask in your profile if a thrombectomy (removing a clot from the brain) was a reasonable procedure to do on a 92 year old.

In the absence of clear instructions (a MOLST, POLST or DNR, or being on hospice--as indicated on a Medic bracelet or pendent) doctors will spring into action to save a life. The thrombectomy is the gold standard reponse to a stroke caused by a clot these days.

So yes, it was the expected response. I am so sorry that your mother's passing was painful to you and to her.

My father had a stroke and this procedure done almost 4 weeks ago. It took him nearly 2 weeks to wake up, and he wasn’t sedated. He is 75, and we’ve been told his road to recovery is going to be extremely long.

I know how devastating this can be, and I’m truly sorry for your loss. You have to understand that your mother was already at the end of her life. 92 is a dream for some that others never reach. It’s probable that due to her age, her body could not recover from the stroke. It also depends on where the stroke occurred, and how substantial the bleed was.

Take comfort in that she wasn’t fearful or in pain. My grandmother was in terrible agony and distress, begging for us to kill her. Feel blessed that you were both spared that.
