Going through the same thing here. Dad has bounced back and forth between skilled nursing and the hospital for the last 4 weeks but we still pay rent at assisted living although it looks like they charged me less this month. Maybe it has to do with the buyup plan. He will not be returning to AL so I should have a letter from the doctor today or tomorrow indicating his need for a higher level of care (memory care or adult care home). Then I can give 30 day notice unless I can use the 15 day clause in the lease that says if they are unable to supply the level of care needed at the AL, then only 15 day notice is needed although I suspect they will not allow that.
If you feel she is not going to improve enough to return to independent living, that is a different question. Whoever is POA needs to work with care team at rehab to see if a return to IL is realistic. Rent in IL will be needed to hold the room she had, but an alternate plan may be needed.
The only aspect you might question of administration is whether payment for medication management and what care is payed for help with dressing etc. It depends on how the billing is for that. Regarding rent you would have to realize that her unit is still being held and is not available for anyone else.
Yes, she would pay her rent. Even in the case a person has no personal possessions and only a room it is unlikely to be able to rent out that room space, and then kick the person who is paying rent out when the resident returns. If there are costs that are for care, then perhaps that will be deducted.
I know here in Vancouver, Canada the rent still has to be paid when a resident is admitted to hospital or else their room will be assigned to someone else. In fact after my dear mom died in hospital they wanted her stuff GONE! the next day.
Yes she does. It’s no different than renting or paying a mortgage. You pay the same amount regardless Of how much time you spend at home during the month. And her belongings are still occupying her room so she’s still technically occupying it & responsible for paying for it.
I believe so in order to hold her place. It may be that they allow residents so many days to be absent due to being in the hospital/rehab. Your question is not crazy, but you need to look into this as soon as possible. Do you have a copy of the contract? The answer may be in there somewhere. Also, there are no crazy questions! If you mean Independent living like she has an apartment and meals and activities are included in the cost, yes she pays rent.
If an AL, with Mom if in hospital or rehab more than two weeks then she paid rent and was credited for the care portion because she was not there.
Read the contract but pretty sure rent is still paid.
