My aunt cut off her tv. She has no tv and no radio in the house. She sits there in darkness. She doesn't want the tv or the radio. I ask her. She just chuckles. I don't know how she stands it like that. I have offered to turn the cable on for her, but no. Also, no social interaction with anyone.
Has anyone experienced this with their loved one? It's bothersome. I don't understand.

If she has dementia, it's almost impossible for them to process what's going on in a TV show or the radio.

Music from her era might be a better idea because it'd be familiar to her. That was the only thing my mom responded to. Before her dementia was too bad she would only watch reruns of The Big Bang Theory because she'd seen every one of them multiple times.

Memory care or senior day care would help provide her with some external stimulation. Memory care definitely perked my mom up quite a bit once we moved her there.

Your the person who Aunt made u POA and you live too far away, right. I guess u went to visit and found this out. Your Aunt needs to be evaluated. This is not normal.

Have you been able to revoke ur POA?

Assuming your aunt has Alzheimer's/dementia since that's where you put the question, she should not be living alone where she's sitting in the dark, etc. Total lack of socialization and interaction with others is likely to make her go downhill faster. Not to mention living alone is extremely dangerous with dementia (if that's the case). If not, and she's living with you or someone else and not wanting to watch tv or listen to the radio, that's fine bc she probably cannot follow what's going on with a show anyway.

Sitting in darkness is not normal or healthy. Zero interaction. Even hermits need some interaction. I think your aunt isn’t very well. It sounds depressive, suicidal, like giving up on life.

Does she smile? Does she enjoy eating the food she eats?

My father's side of the family were basically all hermits. They didn't socialize, sat alone, did have a TV tho, whether they watched it or not I do not know.

They all died alone, their choice. We just let them be.

Given the inane content on both of them I can't see she's missing much. What about supplying her with a way to listen to music from her era, or classic TV shows like Lawrence Whelk or the Andy Griffith Show etc.
And she might benefit from adult day care a few days a week.
