This is called the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. As a spouse of a Veteran she may be entitled to 1000.00 a month for Home Care to Skilled Nursing . The forms you need are:
VSO 3 (physician’s form)*
21-526 (for the veteran)
21-534 (for surviving spouse)

To kverduyn:
You did not mention your Mother's health problems, age, nor if she is already receiving Medicaid/Medicare benefits.
If she is already receiving one or both of these benefits, please weigh out your options of which to choose for her that will give her the greatest benefits.
I too found out years ago that my Mothers' Social Security income would be greater than filing under her own if she had filed under my Father's military. But an Angel, my Mother's case worker told me her opinion and it was 'Leave things as they are'; reason being my Mother had a host of major medical problems which drawing a higher amount of money from S.S. would not have compensated for her medical care. Truthfully, it would not have touched it as in covering the cost.
The more info you can get from your Social Security office and the military can surely bring you to making the correct decisions for your Mother.
May God bless you on your journey. Good Luck.
