He receives medicaid and SSDI. The amount I pay for health care services is well above his SSDI income. Can I claim him as a dependent to reduce my taxes without him losing his medicaid benefits or his SSDI income?

Find Care & Housing
Thanks igloo. I will try Reddit. My CPA is uncertain and my Elder Lawyer says she will research before end of year. I cannot find 15 hours of reliable home health workers each week that the State of Maine would pay for if I did find and train them. So, to not go crazy I hired privately from a reliable business at $600 a week. I can't do that too much longer. The State already pays for 60 hours of workers that I hire and train for with a revolving door of underpaid but lovely helpers who are in constant flux.

Why are you paying for his health services? Between Medicare and Medicaid all his doctor and hospital bills should be paid. Medicaid has an "in home" program where he gets an aide for a certain amount of hours. If his care is 24/7 care, maybe time to place him in LTC.

Does he live with you? You must be able to prove you put out 50% towards his care. See if you can find a CPA who has delt with Medicaid. Or, call his caseworker.

No shade to the many who graciously post answers on this forum, but I would ask this question @ Reddit on both their r/SocialSecurity and r/Medicaid subgroups. Theres both attys who have done SSDI filings and State Medicaid caseworkers and CPAs in both so the answers are very detailed. Really it’s quite amazing. And Reddit allows for answers to have hyperlinks posted, so you get State specific information. This site doesn’t allow for links.
