If he is in stage 6, I would start looking for an MC facility now. Being in this stage and still being at home is a tribute to your care of him. Stage 7 gets to be very difficult for the caregiver but I know some AD patients do die at home. Moving him into a MC facility will depend on your emotional and physical ability to care for him. Nevertheless, I would start looking at places and even put your name on the waiting list (most facilities are currently filled and will create a waiting list). If, or when, you're called that a room is available, you can decline and you will still be kept on the list.
It's great you have LTC insurance but it probably won't cover the entire amount that the facility will charge. For me, our LTC insurance covered about 2/3 of the cost. Plan to have some out of pocket cost.
I think he would qualify for Memory Care now. Be aware though, its private pay. As such, I would consult with a lawyer versed in Medicaid to help you protect your share of the assets if Medicaid is ever needed. Medicaid allows for a Community Spouse. Some people are not aware of this and drain their savings paying for care of a Spouse. You can protect your share.
