Very embarrassing to everyone but him. He tells everyone he has a girlfriend. She has done everything she can short of a restraining order to get rid of him. We have been happily married for 43 years he has been diagnosed with vascular dementia. Any ideas??? Thanks.

I know you're sad and embarrassed about this. Does your husband still realize that you're his wife?

What is happening is not reserved for men with dementia. I have a 84 yo man who has decided that we're a couple. I'm 62. His health is poor, so he really needs a caregiver more than a girlfriend. I think it is an ego thing that a man does to make him feel he is still desirable. I hope it wears off soon for your husband. Maybe it's best just to go along with it until it does unless he makes too big a pest of himself. I know it is hurtful, but I would be reluctant to recommend taking a skillet to someone with vascular dementia. Hugs while you work through this.
