He only gets up to use the bathroom, or eat. I don't want him to get bedsores. He is also 85 yrs old with dementia. His muscles are very weak,so he hangs onto walls & furniture. I have a hard time getting him to take baths . He wants me to have sex with him,but that is out of the question anymore! !! He leaves poop & pee on the bed,& toilet. I clean it up 6 or 7 times a day!!! I'm also disabled. How can I get hubby up & moving around more, without prospect of sex? (He can't do anything like that anymore ) I love him but ???????

I sure hope his new willingness to get up continues.

Have you discussed this with his doctor?

In the final stage of his dementia, my husband did not get more confused or more forgetful. He got weaker and weaker. It was his physical abilities that seemed to be failing more than his cognitive ones. When he reached 20 hours of sleeping per day I called for a hospice evaluation, and he went on that program.

It's not just your husband. I know this couple, he's 81 and she's 82. He's had a stroke that affected his right side. He needs a walker and is very feeble. He still gets after her for sex and she told him no way! No more! I'm done!

Another woman I used to know had a severe brain injury. She was in a wheelchair and had to wear Depends. While her husband was changing her she'd convey to him that she wanted to have sex. Of course, changing his wife's diapers did nothing for his sex drive. It just goes to show you that sex is a basic human instinct that we all have.

I'm glad he got up on his own! I hope he keeps it up!

Dear Eyerishlass,Lol he did forget!!! He got up on his own this evening.Istopped calling,& cajoling him, about staying in bed,& he's up!!! Maybe all older men talk of sex, even when it is just a dream;) I'll keep ya posted about this... I spoil him a lot;but I'm concerned about him laying down all the time. Thank you so much.

His muscles are weak because he stays in bed. He will continue to deteriorate physically if he doesn't get up and get moving. It's a vicious cycle. He feels weak so he stays in bed but staying in bed causes weakness. The only solution is for him to get up. But you can't force him to get up. He has to do it on his own because no one is going to come over and haul him out of the bed physically. If he won't get up on his own you're fighting a losing battle.

Maybe tell him you'll have sex with him if he gets up and then hope that he forgets it.
(I kid).
