I fix his meds weekly. He is mostly alert - sleeps 15 hours a day and is very stubborn - my thought is to open t he correct next day's pills before bed - with the.hope he remembers why it is open. Any ideas?

If he will only take one dose of pills a day perhaps some of them could be prescribed as long acting/extended release. You can look up the medication on the web and see if they come in that form. If they do the cost may be increased for that formulation.

Thanks to all of you - very helpful suggestions. I think one day at a time may work for us. I had not mentioned that he does not respond well to my waking him up for pills - so often times morning pills become afternoon ones. Thanks so much. Betsy

Are you out at work all day? If you are home you may just need to give them to him at the correct time. If you can not do this get a single day pill box and give him one day at a time. May be now would also be a good time to talk to his Dr and see if there is anything that can be safely discontinued. He is clearly entering a transition period where he can safely be allowed to do some things but in other areas needs more supervision. This will be very difficult for you because he will resent this kind of supervision so tread softly and do things by slight of hand rather that outright argument.

I agree with Stevensmom. Most weekly pill containers are able to be separated day-by-day. Just put out the pills for the day and hide the rest. I'm having somewhat of the same problem with my mom, who is forgetting to take her meds. Now I make her get up and go check her meds in the morning and evening. Otherwise she'll tell me she's taken them when she hasn't. I'd rather her miss a dose than take a double dose. So only keep out one day's meds at a time for your husband.

My mom has a calendar clock, but it doesn't seem to do her any good, since she doesn't remember it is there or why she would need to look at it. Off the top of my head, could you put just one day's meds out at a time?

Since you're already fixing his meds you might have to go one step further from now on and make sure he takes his meds for the day. I've seen calendar clocks and they're effective....if you can get your husband to pay attention to it. Does he have dementia? If he does and can't take his meds as prescribed you may have a issue trying to get him to correspond the clock to the pill box. If this is a real bad issue you can always hire help to come in for "med reminders". Most nursing agencies offer this service.

There are clocks that show the day of the week available through many places. Do a search for "calendar clock" or "dementia clock" on the web.
