He is unable to do routine things such as showering. He needs help shaving, has forgotten how to turn on the faucet, urinates in the laundry basket, etc., etc. He started this downward spiral about 3 months ago, and has become very agitated, sometimes violent and combative. I finally had to put him in a facility. He was there a week, every day of which they called me to come and "calm him down". They couldn't handle him. He was sent to a neuro/psychiatric hospital for evaluation. Now I can't find a nice facility that will take someone who is combative. What to do?

Oh, this is so sad! My heart goes out to you!

What was the result of the neuro/psych evaluation? Did they come up with a drug or combination of drugs that would help with his agitation and anxiety?

Are you looking at Memory Care facilities? Skilled Nursing Homes? Where is your husband now?

It can be so scary to wonder what arrangements can be made. Does the hospital where he is have a social worker? From what I seen, a dementia patient being combative and resistant is not that uncommon. It's something that hopefully, medication can address. If so, it will help with your search. I would question those at the hospital about placement, depending on how things work out with the medication.

He is still in the N/P hospital (only three days). I'm just trying to plan ahead. Some of the facilities have said they won't take him because of combativeness. One that will take him has a very low overall state rating. Maybe I need to just take one day at a time.
