I have read literature on dementia behavior and I know that the dementia patient does not know what they are doing or saying, that you can't take what they say personally, that you should leave the room and start again in a calm voice. That is the ideal. In reality it is very startling to be yelled at, threatened, and possibly be hurt. Has anyone dealt with such a situation? Thank you!

Yes. My mom was quite verbally abusive during stages 5-6. I read Naomi Feil"s books on validation. Those strategies helped some. I also watched careful for her triggers... The problem is we cannot always remove the trigger and just need to learn to deal with it the best we are able. My mom got a bit pushy and would sometimes hit, but she is a small woman. You need to be careful if your father is getting physical. You must make sure you are safe. First thing is to have a discussion with the doctor and check for a UTI.
