So we went for the family meeting and Dad just does not have safety awareness. He had a stroke 12 days ago and has been working hard at OT and PT, he is standing and looks so much better than before. However, he tried to get out and resulted in an ankle alarm. He just does not get that it is unsafe to go out alone, not to walk without the walker ect. He has thrived at rehab but insists on going back to his apartment, but now it has been decided assisted living is where he should be. Not sure how to break it to him.

This is a tough news to break to dad. I haven't had to do this with my mother yet. But in you shoes, I think I would enlist the help of the doctor to inform dad that he can not live alone because it's unsafe, and that the hospital can not legally release him to go back to his apartment to be by himself.

That would get you off the hook of having to tell him. He can blame the hospital, the doctor, and legal system, but he can't blame you. You then can be the good guy and offer to go look for good AL places where he will LIKE much better.

Good luck. Let me know how it works out for you and dad.

polarbear is right. Always try to place the blame at the foot of the doctor. Doctor's understand this and in my experience have been happy to accept that blame.

And when you talk to your dad about it, acknowledge his desire to stay in his own home. And acknowledge any fear he may have about moving into AL. Just acknowledge his feelings all the way around. Allow him those feelings.
