How to begin to prepare for moving my husband to a care facility?

I don't know what I would have done if my husband didn't have VA benefit. Jeanop, I am sending you the biggest hug and I'm so sorry you are in this position. I really get furious with the system that impoverishes the at home spouse. The money will go quickly--sorry to say, but you already know that. Please see a Medicaid attorney. You can still protect your assets and apply for Medicaid. You may have to have some kind of spend down. Do not start giving away your money. That falls under the 5-year look back. You will be able to keep a car and home without counting toward the measly amount of assets you are allowed to keep. Do not wait any longer. See an attorney about this. Consultations are sometimes free of charge. Also ask them about options so you do not end up in a situation in a few years. Time flies; don't delay. Agency on Aging in your area may help with attorney references. Ask others (friends, relatives) if they know of a good Medicaid attorney. I don't think its true that a trust only helps if it is set up 5 years prior to needing the assistance. Again, a Medicaid attorney will know for sure.

Get started with the VA as soon as possible; they have now delayed all requests to 2020 - it's awful; if the vet is over 80 there is SOME priority not much; but we must all try as they need to fix the broken system. My dad is 89 and has been on the waiting list for over a year and we MIGHT get a reply Mid - August; he is a Purple Heart but that does not help - good luck but don't delay................

Yes, for Medicaid you have to spend down to nothing mostly. I had talked with Social worker before, I am praying for guidance and hope I can keep him at Day Stay as long as possible.

there are people out there that will help. hire a nurse assistant. its cheaper than moving to a facility.

LeeCaregiver1 - THANK YOU for the term "rehab for memory" - we are waiting for a conservatorship MSC next month because my mother in law doesn't believe her Alzheimer's is "that bad". Except that it IS really bad. I will let my husband know what you said - hopefully it will make the transition to assisted living easier - though she has fought us every step so far. :(
