I decided not to play along. I do try to redirect, but until lately that never really worked. Mom is on meds now and has not seen animals in her room for a few weeks and she said the voices have stopped.

"Macular degeneration (AMD) can cause visual hallucinations"

"What Happens with Macular Degeneration:
Vision Loss: AMD damages the macula, the part of the retina for sharp central vision, causing blurry or lost central vision, making it hard to see faces, read, or drive.
Charles Bonnet Syndrome (CBS): When vision loss is significant, the visual cortex, starved of real images, starts generating its own, leading to CBS."

So Mom can have hallucinations from her Dementia and Macular degeneration.

No. Do not play along or agree when a delusion is harmful. Your mother thinks she sees snakes in her room. Tell her that is not true and that what she's probably seeing is floaters in her eyes because she has macular degeneration. Every time she starts up about the snakes you and anyone else present has to correct her because that is a harmful delusion. Depending on how agitated she gets about it, she made need to be medicated. Talk to her doctor about medications.

I did in-home care for a very long time to many kinds of people. Never go along with a delusion that can be harmful, is paranoid, or can cause the person with dementia to becoe agitated and angry. Validating or 'going along' with these kinds of delusions usually makes them worse. Always correct the person.

Harmless delusions are different. I worked for an old lady years ago with dementia. She lived with her family and had a pretty good life considering. She believed she was secretly married to Elvis Presley. We just went along because it made her happy, kept her calm, and did no harm. She wasn't combative at all, didn't wander, and was actually very pleasant and easy to care for. When it was time for her shower we'd call her Mrs. Presley and tell her she had to shower because the hair stylist was coming. Never any fighting or stubbornness.

It's okay to go along with a harmless delusion. Not one that can be harmful. Seeing snakes? Correct that one every time you hear it.

Have you talked to her doctor(s) about this? There are most likely medications to stop her hallucinations. The hallucinations might also be a sign of some kinds of degeneration that needs to be addressed. Check with the right away. As Daughterof1930 said, your mother shouldn't have to live in fear.

The idea behind "playing along" is that you agree with the things that really have no consequence, unless your mom loves snakes I can't imagine how agreeing with her would be in any way reassuring or helpful.

Has she used any glasses to view things recently? You may want to know the stage of dementia and the level of macular degeneration..

Discuss the hallucinations with her doctor and ask about medication to calm this. Mom deserves not to be terrified
