My mom has been discharged from one nursing home for accusations made toward the staff and now this is happening again at her new place. We had recently cut back her Zyprexa a bit and this started to happen. BUT prior to this she seemed overmedicated (sleeping in wheelchair, difficulty thinking and just "out of it" much of the time). Yesterday we put her medication back to the original dosages in hopes this will take care of it. She is in a very good NH and my fear is if we lose this placement she could end up in a mental hospital or a very bad NH. Any thoughts please?

What kind of accusations did your mom make against the NH? And she was asked to leave as a result of these accusations? Were the accusations valid or the result of dementia?

Did you report any behavioral changes to your mom's Dr.? Did (s)he give the go ahead to begin giving your mom the original dose of Zyprexa?

If your mom's behavior is the result of dementia have you considered placing her in a memory care facility? There's probably one within the NH where your mom is right now. Memory care units or facilities tend to be a little more lenient when it comes to behavior related to dementia than if one were in the general area with other residents.

Good ideas above.

I might work with her doctor to find the right medication and dosage, but, if you don't know the reason for her accusations, they may happen again. Do you suspect that the medication caused her to make the accusation against staff? Was is true? Was she having delusions? I'd try to find out what caused the accusation and address it. If it's dementia, she may continue to have delusions and make accusations.

I think that having her assessed to determine what type of facility she needs is a good idea. If she needs Memory Care, they are better able to handle residents with delusions and hallucinations.

Another thought is to have her doctor place her in a hospital in order to adjust her medications. Still, I would explore whether the medication issue is connected to the accusation issue.

My mom is currently in a memory unit. Although she does have dementia she scores High on the test and is very coherent most the time ...she also has a new diagnosis of bipolar disorder and Parkinsonism... She is on Zyprexa Sinemet and Klonopin ...
this is a cocktail that was given to her at a psych Hospital ...we recently reduced the Zyprexa a bit... 14 days they plan on reevaluating her meds and maybe trying something different. She very much believes what she's talking about but when I check out her bump on her head or her bruised legs they did not exist.

I would ask if her doctor and the Memory Care unit believe she is in the right setting. It sounds like she qualifies. The only other thing I can think of is whether she would benefit from being in a hospital. Apparently, they released her, so I would discuss your concerns with her doctor. It sounds like there are several things going on.

I know that with dementia, the patient may say things that are not based on truth or reality. My cousin used to say that her doctor was sleeping on the couch in her lobby. And that puppies were living in the trees outside her window. She's never accused anyone of harming her though. I'm sure that is difficult to handle, especially, if you aren't sure it's accurate.
