Parent almost 93 gets agitated and aggressive when she needs to go to the commode. She needs a wheelchair and walker since last fall when she broke her femur. She has had recurring UTI s but not since July. She takes one 100g Sertrilene in the evening. And has Hydroxizene 50 mg as needed every six hours for anxiety and agitation.
She is okay when she is in her chair but when she has to go in to use commode she gets upset and says harsh things and sometimes hits.
What could work to calm her as this is not typical behavior for her.

Does she use a bed side commode?
Does the toilet in the bathroom have arm rests?

There could be more than 1 issue.
Medication may need to be adjusted/changed.
Since she fell there could be a fear factor at play here.
I know after my Husband fell and broke his hip he was very resistant to getting up and walking for a while. He was just scared.
There may still be residual pain or she may think there is pain and that can cause her to become upset.
When you say she is in her chair. Is that a wheelchair or a recliner or other chair?
there are wheelchairs that have commode holes so she can sit on a wheelchair and be pushed over the toilet and not have to walk with the gait belt to the toilet.
The wheelchairs with the commode holes are not the most comfortable so it would not be a great option for long time sitting. (most are great in the shower as well.)

Oh thanks so much. I never heard of wheelchairs with commode holes. That would make a huge difference.

I do think she needs her meds reevaluated and will ask her primary about it.

My dad (92) was on sertraline, but we realized it was not working for him. He is now taking Seroquel, and it has made such an improvement.

My mom (92) does not like any assistance in the bathroom at all. (My dad is OK with it.) My mom likes her privacy. It took a lot of attempts to have the caregivers bathe her. And she gets agitated when someone is standing too close or within view, “waiting” until she finishes.

So I wonder if your mom feels that she needs more privacy? It’s hard to know. I’m sorry you are experiencing this.

My mom is on Seroquel too, and that has helped also. Sertraline just did not work for my parents.

Also, since the second medication you mention is an anti histamine, perhaps this is making her constipated? Just a thought.
