HI everyone,

My mom is currently suffering from ESLD due to autoimmune hepatitis. I knew she had liver disease buy not the severity. The past three months have been a struggle, in and out of the hospital. Last week she went into the hospital for persistant vomiting. Since then she has had bouts with encephalopathy, a suspected heart attack, continued vomitting, and now loss of speech. Her vitals remain strong although last night she had to be given oxygen due to the pulling in her chest while breathing and was rushed to the ICU. There is no doubt about it, she is suffering. How long does this normally last? The drs just keep telling me we'll take it day by day. Any experience you can share would be appreciated. No one should have to suffer like this.

I so agree with MACinCT. Do contact the ethics board if the MDs will not speak honestly with you. Only they can make a guess at this. Any illness is as individual to a person as their own fingerprint. You need answers from the MD. Call in Social Services and tell them you want to consider hospice or palliative care and you need ANSWERS and if you don't get them you will let an ethics committee explore why not. They cannot give you a date, but they can give you an idea and the reasons for it and they need to do it. If life happened a day at a time that would be lovely; unfortunately we need to make plans. I wish you the best and am so sorry.

And you tell them what your mother's previously documented end of life wishes are, if you have them in an advance directive.

Ask about palliative care and hospice care. When they say '"wait and see" you say " my mother did not want to suffer like this at the end of her life. If she has a life limiting illness, we should consider comfort care".

Have you talked to her doctor about hospice?

I have and they just told me, "let's wait and see." I am not getting any solid info from them.
