Hi mom is in stage 7 of Alzheimer's and has been on hospice care for 2mths..the pass 2 weeks she dnt want to get up for breakfast or lunch..when they do get her up she takes 1 or 2 bites she does drink a little ensure..my question how long can she last if she is not eating much or drinking??? hospice says it's normal which I know that..but how long can here body go..

Thanks..she is in her chair or gel hair all day..hospice tole me that she will stay with them till she pass away..today she ate s little better..which is a good thing but dnt know what will happen tommorrow...things so much for your kind words..

Everybody's idea of "very little" is different, and how many calories she needs also varies depending on how active she is and what her weight is currently. My mom averages about 1000 calories a day and she isn't losing weight.

It would be helpful if there was some sort of gauge to answer your question. However, each person is different, today may be much different than tomorrow. Today she may not eat and tomorrow be very hungry. Often they will decrease how much they eat and drink which often means the end is close. But they can improve to the point of being discharged from hospice.

I am sorry momof5 this must be hard for you and family.
