My mom is 94, on oxygen, lots of meds for her heart and breathing, and has not been able to walk in 5 years. She is very, very thin. She developed Alzhiemers 6 months ago. 5 days ago she fell out of her chair and broke both knees. The surgeon put pins in her knees to allerviate pain. She is on IV fluids---no food---and will not eat, drink or allow herself to be moved. A person must be with her at all times so she doesn't try to rip out her lines. I think her body is trying to die... She has been on and off hospice 3 times and that is our next step. Thank you.

She can continue to suffer on IV fluids for weeks or months, especially with the oxygen. What are her wishes? If she is suffering and wants a peaceful demise, you call Hospice and agree to D/C meds except comfort care, you turn off the oxygen and the IV and let her go in her sleep.

People can carry on for quite a while on fluids. The human body requires hydration more than food. I've seen elderly people on hospice go on 3 to 4 weeks with just sip's of water. Is she on any medication for agitation? or pain? That could be very beneficial at this point. Perhaps it's time for Hospice again and another evaluation. Retired nurse ♥

Thank you. They can't give her the normal Ativan she gets for agitation and it's hard because we know she would not want this but she is 90% not in her right mind. I do think hospice is next and they can guide us. I really appreciate your input and the information.
