Do I put dad in another bedroom with the CG sitting nearby.. reading or watching TV? He has started to get up alot in the night, forgets where he is, wakes everyone up. Hubs and I work, and Mom is getting over bronchitis. He gets lost going across the hall to the bathroom , trips and fall if we get him back to bed.. gets angry and says he has things to do! The new meds are NOT working, and we are getting exhausted!

Thank you Jeffrey! Last night we gave 2 seraquel and 2 remeron per the Dr advice. Dad only got up once to go to the bathroom was easy to put back to bed ( we told him it was cold and snowing outside..) He slept until 830 this am.. and in a good mood today. I don;t trust anything all the way yet, but this was better! Our agency has night time carers.. thanks for all your advice on how they work!

pamzimmrrt - we did this for my Mom when she was living alone. The caregiver stayed in same room as bedroom, yeah about 100-120 dollars/night. Also have done two separate nights when she was living here with me, and I had to go to a work function. Same thing. In both cases, I looked for respite caregivers with that capability before hiring them, and they got to know my Mom doing respite support at other times.

Last night mom held the seraquel and only gave dad the remeron.. he went to bed at 8.. was up from 9 on and off... somehow I managed to get 4 hours of sleep... I felt like a new person at work but hubs had to make sure Mom got a good nap today. They were both in bed when I got home at 830 tonight. Gonna call the Dr again tomorrow.

Baby monitors ( Cams and audio devices ) can and have been hacked. Be aware these hackers can talk through these monitors and scare the daylights out of people.
NT's can be anywhere close enough to monitor their client.
I use LED auto lights aimed to go on any time my mom moves out her bed.
It's quiet, effective, and I can see it from the other room. They act as a sort of non intrusive, silent alarm.
You can also use garage alarms ( inexpensive from recycle stores).
Any Television can easily be fitted with headphones. As long the volume is not too loud you can easily monitor the movement noise from client in the next room.
Most televisions come with hearing impaired aides ( sub titles ) that can used instead of volume. You probably have this feature.
The worst thing for a NT is the boredom of a long silent night.Perhaps she could dust, fold clothing, set your parents up for morning meals, bath's etc?
Save you time and energy as well.

Ask the doctor about Melatonin. It might help him to stay asleep.

Thanks PAms,, I should only need one 2 or 3 nights a week, My schedule at the hospital is 3 days a week (12 hours a day) I am ok with getting up with him the rest of the time (so far...LOL) We have a great agency I work with, but was just looking for some imput! Normally we can get him back to bed in less than an hour. We have a great daytime CG for the days I work but this would be new for us

No, you can put the NTCG in the living room with a baby monitor in your parents room. Hope that works. An 8 hr night shift would be $80 per night at the very minimum. That's $2400 a month, but still cheaper than a nursing home.

Opps, NT was in reference to Nighttime caregiver...LOL... Trying to type less! Maybe I should have said ON? As I did say overnight CG... Just trying to figure out where to put dad and CG so the rest of us can sleep.. I can;t see them sitting in Mom and Dads bedroom..... I want mom to sleep too and get better. We have a big house, but still... I am afraid the TV in the extra set up room will keep hubs and I up

What did you mean by NT? I thought you were referring to nortriptyline.

Again, I am interested in how the logistics of a NT CG works?

NO adding Nortryptilene NO major interaction with Remeron. Talk to the pharmacist.

Thank you, we have been to the Dr several times, last time last Mon. He is on seraquel and remeron for a week now.. they doubled the nighttime seraqeul and added the remeron.. he still gets up at least once and then sometimes more. I am in medicine and I am ALL about better liveing through pharmaceuticals!! (sorry about the spelling.. I am sleep deprived!) He is late stage.. This has been going on for 3 weeks.. I am willing to give it time. just wondering if NT help would get us over the hump and how it works?

New meds---especially SSRI and SNRI antidepressants take a month to kick in. In the meantime try a snack before bed, milk and cereal or some other comfort food.

You need to be in touch with prescribing doc, to tell her/him that meds don't work.
