A month or so after my father was home after his spinal cord injury I managed to propel one wheel of my father's chair clear off the ramp while trying to get back into the van after a doctor's appointment. I freaked out and thought we would have to call the fire department! Luckily a nice strong young guy was nearby in the parking lot and he immediately came to our rescue and managed to lift the 300 lb. chair back onto the ramp. Needless to say, I was a tad rattled. . .
I'm assuming you have some familiarity with power wheelchairs? I did not, before my father had to have one, and I was surprised at how heavy and frankly kind of dangerous they are if you aren't careful. I almost took a toenail off when I was maneuvering my dad into our van. Just a word to the wise!
When my husband got his, we had an in-home training of three sessions with the company’s trainer for both him and me. But, I agree. A friend’s wife went sideways off their ramp once on her’s. Luckily, she was at the bottom of the ramp, but she could have been badly injured.
Two things to try. Call 2-1-1. This is the United Way and they may know of an organization who loans out Durable Medical Equipment. I know there’s one in my city. You can also contact your local Area Agency on Aging and ask them. Also, Facebook Marketplace has used power chairs for a lot less than what they cost new. If the person who needs one can get a doctor’s order and is on Medicare, they may pay for it. My husband has a power chair that lists at $30,000 and Medicare paid for all except $300. Good luck. I do not know about borrowing a powered w/c, but here is some information on a rental. Scootaround, book online or call (800) 943-4329. Arrange rental at your destination, company will deliver to your residence.
I have never heard of borrowing a power wheelchair. Many places have non motorized w/c for people to use when needed like amusement parks or museums (supermarkets have motorized ones).
