I know mortgage is not considered an asset when there is a spouse still living in the home and the other is in a nursing home receiving Medicaid. What about the couple who lives in an apartment with a monthly rent of $900? They’ve sold their home and have $100,000 in the bank to pay for rent for next 10 years of their life. Will Medicaid take this money? How can it be protected? Resides in Virginia.

From what I understand, they will take half of your savings for spouses care. You won't be left destitute. This is a question for Medicaid.
