My grandmother does not have a problem with bathing herself. We just stand in the bathroom with her to make sure she puts her night clothes on correctly. She takes wash ups which she has been doing for as long as I have known her. But now it is a pain to get her to take a wash up sometimes. We insist that she takes a shower at least once a week but that's even worse. Does anyone have any tips or tricks for getting a person with dementia to take a bath (shower)?

My dad does the same thing. It is better now that he is in assisted living because his bathroom is set up better for it. When he was at his house, we would have a caregiver sponge bathe him. We still have caregivers coming a few days a week even though he is in assisted living and between them and the staff at the AL, they can usually talk him into it every couple weeks. We try and use the idea that he needs to bathe for church, etc. We try to center it around an activity that he likes to do.

We try to do that as well but it doesn't work. For the longest she was thinking that our house is actually hers and now she is on a roll knowing that she isn't in her house which is making her stay here a lot harder than it was before. And like I said.....she can do it herself it's just getting her to actually go do it that's the problem.

Ask her why she doesn’t want a shower.

with my Dad..he complained that the room was too cold and he was always cold a long time after.

we solved that by running a space heater in the bath till the room was really hot. His towels were put in the dryer in high so they were very warm to dry with.

Se has very funny ways. Sometimes she says she just doesn't want to....recently shell say the tub isn't clean although she watched me clean it before. And I already know if I ask her why she doesn't want to she is going to get defensive and irritable. But I will try asking when her next shower day comes around. Thank you!
