I quit my lucrative job to stay at home to take care of my aging parent. Her doctor advised me of programs that pay children to care for their aging parent when medical assistance is not necessary, but assistance is needed. Although I find many references on the internet that support this, I still can't find out how to get this assistance.

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE OR SOLUTIONS?

Lexi, I would do a search for community services in your area. There are tons of different charitable organizations that can help people in need. Look for religious based programs. Ask them about other services available. They know what is available in the area and can help get things set up for your mom and you.

Any help with living expenses helps take the pressure off and can provide extra available cash to take care of other needs.

If your sister's are going out of their way to make life harder, I recommend cutting contact with them. Whatever sick game they are playing can only draw you in if you allow it. Don't ask for help, don't share information and learn to hang up and walk away without engaging in their hateful behavior. You can't change them, but you can change how you deal with them.

Best of luck finding solutions for your situation.

You say we lost our car, is that you and mom or do you have others living with you?

Lexi, Families at times seem to cause more problems than they help. One of my brothers did nothing but take money, along with his two kids being dishonest. Contact Harris County Area Agency on Aging. They may know of additional resources. Try contacting St Vincent de Paul charities in Houston. They sometimes have cars they donate to those in need. I hope you get the help you need.

Lexi if your mom is in Medicaid then you need to contact health and human services in your county (Harris county). Texas has the STAR plus program which allows certain family members to be a paid caregiver, for someone who is disabled OR 65+ and medically
needy. There is also Community First choice and the requirements are the basically same-your mom has to be on Medicaid and need nursing home level care.

I think that there is a stipend for those who take care of relatives through the Social security administration. Your relative must be receiving Social Security Disability or SSI. A friend of mine had her husband taking care of her and he received a small amount each month and also got medicare, too. You may want to call and ask them about that. There may be county programs that give stipends to those who take care of relatives-In my county, they have a program that does it and my mom got paid for taking care of my dad before he went into assisted living. So you may want to call your county aging services and ask about that.

Just a warning: These stipends are usually very small amounts.

There’s no social security stipend for family caregivers. Social security does not pay caregivers at all. If he was receiving something through, it isn’t because he was a caregiver. It was either his own SS or SSI based off his work history.

Thank you all for your input. I will take it all under advisement.

i did contact Medicaid and they said there is no such program. Why is it all over the Internet?

i guess I was hoping someone had been through my situation and could give me step by step instructions. But I know each situation is different.

I do do thank you for caring, this is the first time anyone has listened to me.

Was your dad a vet during wartime? VA benefits allow aid and assistance to be used for a caregiver’s pay, including payment to a child who cares for a parent. The maximum pay is around $1200 a month.

Becky04473,
Thats what's so difficult, all these families take care of the one making the sacrifices by not working, let alone the abuse I get from the whole family because everyone thinks I'm not doing what I should!
I don't want to complain I just want this to end and have my life back and be able to make my own decisions. My sisters are having a blast making my life as tough as it can be without lifting a finger or putting in a dollar to just be nice.
We recently lost our car and now it's up to me to find the solution. That being said if anyone knows of an inexpensive decent car in Houston area or a program to help me, I'd welcome any ideas.

What state are you in? If your mom is on Medicaid then she may be eligible for home care and can
hire you as her caregiver however in most states you will be ineligible to be her paid caregiver if you are her POA. You should rethink giving up your lucrative job because if your mom cannot afford to pay you, then at most you will be paid minimum wage to a little over minimum wage, with no benefits and no paid time off. In fact you won’t even be paid to take care of her full time. You need to think about your own future here....

Search google how to get paid through Medicaid.

As for work from home jobs, be careful with fake promises.

Thank you. That's what I've done and they say they know nothing about it. However looking on the internet tells me there is a program. I don't care how small it is, I just need something. I've also looked into working from home jobs and have a few thousand believing the wrong people.
STILL ASKING FOR HELP, PLEASE!

There are some state Medicaid waivers. They are generally for 12 hours a week and pay is minimal. Most adult children, if paid, are by their parents if they have funds available. Contact your Area Agency on Aging to see if they know of any programs in your area.

NO they are not generally 12 hours a week!!!! The amount of hours give is determined by the level of care the person needs. Many states will pay 20-40 hours a week. A few states will pay a maximum of 20 hours a week.
