Are you guessing he has advanced dementia or has a doctor actually diagnosed him at this stage? I'm asking because if he is a candidate for AL, and he can't afford it, Medicaid doesn't really cover the cost for that, only MC and LTC. It sounds like he's mostly very depressed, which doesn't necessarily mean he has advanced dementia. You might want to consider a facility that has AL, MC and LTC and accepts Medicaid recipients. Consulting a Medicaid planner or elder law attorney is a worthwhile investment so you can make more informed decisions on his behalf.

If he has been diagnosed with dementia you find a facility that can accept him. You will probably have to take him for a physical and there my be some tests he will have to have, a TB test is probably required. If you are his POA you can have the paperwork done to get started admitting him as a resident. The facility will probably do en evaluation to determine what level of help he needs. All facilities will have a Social Worker that can help you with any questions. The important thing is to tour a few facilities and ask question.

Take him to get a cognitive test so the doctor can get a baseline of where he's at. Some people look better to strangers. Document what you observe and show the doctor
