Both of my parents live at home, with me living next door. I have a caregiver help me 5 hours a day, five days a week, helping them shower and get breakfast and lunch. However, they are beginning to need more care in the evenings and during the night. Both are suffering from varying levels of dementia. Additionally, one of them is suffering from Parkinson's Disease.
I am having their basement converted to a semi-private living area so that we can hire someone to live with them. That would allow me to travel occasionally and go out for an evening. Ideally, the person would exchange room for care. Any suggestions? How would I go about finding someone like this?
Some foreign grad students will accept the arrangement you are suggesting. As part of their student visa they were supposed to make arrangements to pay their expenses before they arrive. Your arrangement could jeopardize their visa status.
With foreign students. Their may be language and cultural barriers with Your parents. You would also need to do background checks.
It’s devastating watching parents decline.
My mom has Parkinson’s disease so I know how hard it is to witness this firsthand.
Supplying housing isn’t going to cover all costs. Your employee will still require a salary.
What are you looking for? Someone with experience? Or perhaps a recent grad student? They would appreciate your offer of housing.
Everyone needs some time off or they will burn out. How will you handle that?
