Find Care & Housing
IMO, I think placing him on Medicaid in a nice Long term care facility would be better. Your profile says you are willing to work. Caring for your brother will effect the amount of the SS you will receive. SS goes back 35 years from the date you plan on taking it. If in those 35 yrs you didn't work 10 of them, your SS is based on 25 years. All those years you worked before the 35 don't count.

Your brothers care will only worsen. If your not already stuck with him 24/7 you will be. I think you'll get him on Medicaid faster than you'll find an agency to pay you. You can check on Medicaid in home care. Maybe you can get an aide for a few hours a day to give you a break.

Yes Darlene, If your brother qualifies for medicaid or whatever state funded health coverage system, they will pay you to care for him as long as you are qualified/credentialed. Some states will provide credentialing programs for free or at a reduced rate if you're not already credentialed.
You should inquire about what is required of you to be paid to care for him and go forward from there.

Hi, Darlene. Sorry to hear about your brother’s health issues.

Is your brother on Medicaid? It looks like Indiana does have a program that may pay a family caregiver if the recipient qualifies. Might be something to check into through your county’s Agency on Aging office or website.

One caution is that apparently the pay for these sorts of programs is low. You really don’t want to risk impoverishing yourself and your own future old age and retirement if you can’t afford to work for low pay indefinitely.

Best wishes to you both.
